Surah Muhammad Ayat 19 Translation Tafseer

Para 26 - حٰمٓ

سورة محمد

بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِیْمِ

47.19

فَاعْلَمْ اَنَّهٗ لَاۤ اِلٰهَ اِلَّا اللّٰهُ وَ اسْتَغْفِرْ لِذَنْۢبِكَ وَ لِلْمُؤْمِنِیْنَ وَ الْمُؤْمِنٰتِؕ-وَ اللّٰهُ یَعْلَمُ مُتَقَلَّبَكُمْ وَ مَثْوٰىكُمْ۠ (19)

Kanz-ul-Irfan

So know that there is no god but Allah, [1] and ˹dear Beloved Prophet,˺ seek forgiveness for the sins of your close ones and the believing men and women. [2] And ˹O people!˺ Allah knows of your activities by day and your resting by night.

Commentary

Here, knowing does not refer to knowing for the first time; rather it refers to remaining steadfast upon the knowledge and certainty you have regarding the Oneness of Allah Almighty.

Suppose the address in this verse is towards the Holy Prophet صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم. In that case, it does not mean that the Prophet صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم committed a sin which now affords repentance, because he is infallible. Rather, this command is issued for the nation (ummah) to follow him صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم in seeking Allah's forgiveness. Alternatively, the address is ostensibly towards the Holy Prophet صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم. However, it refers to his household and elite followers. So the meaning of the verse is ―seek forgiveness for the sins of your household and elite followers.
